Must See at Ash’s

Ash’s developed and installed a magnificent photographic mural based on the Savannah Way and Karumba in early 2007 — this was produced through the Golden Quill from Ravenshoe who also publish the fabulous Tropical North Queensland calendar each year. The mural is approximately 6 metres long and 2 metres high and is located in the revamped under cover seating area at the front of the Café. An additional feature is a mosaic depicting various aspects of the Karumba environment which was created by the Tunney family in early 2007.

What's Happening in Karumba

Karumba is a unique destination - truly outback by the sea - and a must see for all travellers. This is where the Norman River flows into the Gulf of Carpentaria providing a rich variety of bird and wildlife as well as great fishing - which has traditionally been a key activity in the area.

Today you can also choose from other activities and developments, so why not a scenic flight or a fishing charter with some friends, maybe take a scenic sunset cruise on the Norman River before getting into some serious relaxing on your holiday. The bird and wildlife vary with the seasons as do the savannah wetlands - from dry savannah to green lush wetlands - a truly memorable sight.

If that all seems too fast paced, then you can always stroll around Karumba's Sunday Markets at the Point - and don't forget to visit the Barramundi Discovery Centre.

A little bit about Karumba!

Karumba actually comprises two areas which have grown along the bank of the Norman River — Karumba Point is located at the mouth of the Norman River where it meets and flows into the Gulf of Carpentaria. Karumba town area is about 6-8km further along the Norman River and includes much of the commercial fishing, mining and pastoral industry activities. Along with being a key destination for recreational fishing Karumba and the Gulf boast prolific birdlife. The savannah bushland and adjoining marine wetlands which extend for up to 30km inland provide a setting in which you can constantly be amazed.

You can choose from activities such as fishing charters, river cruises including bird watching, croc spotting and local history, croc & crab tours, scenic flights and sunset cruises. Through the season you can also take in the Sunday Markets and enjoy some of the local community events. Be sure not to miss a visit to the Barramundi Discovery Centre — you can even adopt a Barra and help support their ongoing work at the hatchery.

Karumba Community Anglers Classic — this is a fun, family orientated community event with lots of activities across the weekend — held on the first weekend in the March/April school holidays each year. The funds raised on the weekend go to support the Barra Farm and community projects. Ash’s is a major sponsor.

Annual Charity Bike Ride

Cairns to Karumba — Coast to Coast Bike Ride 2008 — Join Ash’s (major sponsor) in supporting the 11th Coast to Coast Bike Ride — this is a 7 day journey on two wheels following the Savannah Way from Cairns to Karumba — running from June 29th to July 5th. Winding up the range and through rainforest, volcanic landscapes and the savannah outback this event has raised over $500,000 in past years which has been donated back to support and assist children in the outback and rural/remote areas of Far North Queensland. It is unique in the event is 100% voluntarily run and 95% of the funds raised are given away to nominated beneficiaries across the region. Hit on the link below to learn more!
